Advocacy is an integral part of Dr. McHugh's motivation to be a physician, and she has inspired many others along the way. By being a visible physician advocate for reproductive rights and health equity, her reach as a physician extends far beyond the individual patient in the exam room.
Education in physician advocacy is severely lacking and sometimes non-existent in medical training.
Dr. McHugh developed and implemented a Healthcare Advocacy Curriculum for her trainees, which was wildly successful both in recruitment as well as advocacy output from learners.
Dr. McHugh believes that we are smarter, stronger, and better when we work together. To schedule advocacy trainings or collaborate on projects, click "Contact Dr. McHugh" to connect.
In the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. McHugh was unable to participate in much of her usual work. Like many physicians, she worked significantly more than usual, outside of her normal scope, and felt deeply disconnected. She reached out to a colleague in Boston and started the O+G Advocates, a podcast by OB/GYNs for anyone who wants to hear others wrestle with hard topics, feel angry at systemic injustice, but be committed to finding ways to make things better.
The podcast has been downloaded several thousand times and the Advocates have endless ideas of topics, guests, and inspirational material for future episodes. Visit OGAdvocates.com to learn more, connect with the hosts, and suggest speakers!
